We usually spend a lot more time in our homes during the winter… I know we do. It is the perfect time to focus our efforts on making home a place that we want to be! Check out my 4 simple ways to make your home cozy.
As of recent years, the Danish term hygge (pronounced hew-guh), has gained a lot of attention.
If you are not familiar, it is a word that basically means anything that is cozy, special and charming. It can refer to a moment between friends, a special day or the feeling in a home.
It doesn’t really mean, if I buy a candle and a chunky blanket for my couch, now my house has hygge. It’s more of a feeling of contentment and coziness. So whatever makes you feel secure and special and cozy in your house, than that is hygge to you!
So here are some things that make my home feel cozy to me!

The Most Important Thing –
Before I talk about what things I like to have in my home that make it feel cozy, I have to mention the most important thing.
Love and contentment! If your home has people in it that love each other, and/or you are a person who has found and chosen contentment with your life, than your home will be filled with hygge. The kind that really matters!
For us, that looks like faith in Jesus Christ as our savior, and the ultimate peace and contentment that comes with knowing Him and loving Him.
If you are always thinking that if you buy this, that and the other thing, and if you could only fix things about your home and then you will be happy there, then none of my tips will help you in the long run.
Having a warm and cozy feeling in your home starts with where your heart is.

Something Glowing –
I just love the way a glowing light makes a room feel. The main thing that makes a light, a glow, is that it has a yellow or pink shade. Those soft warm colors just feel so cozy and relaxing to me. There are some different ways to achieve a good “glow”… here a my favorites.
Pink Himalayan Salt Lamps –
I am absolutely crazy about my salt lamps. I leave them on almost all the time, and they are the prettiest, glowy-est little things that really make me feel happy when I see them. They emit the softest, golden pink light and I just can’t get enough. I have one in my kitchen/living room area, one in my den and now a night light one in my bathroom. I love how they light rooms softly aglow at night… Just enough to see to walk around by.
Essential Oil Diffuser –
Next up in the glow department is an ultrasonic essential oil diffuser. My favorite is the Desert Mist. Young Living sells the best diffusers. I’ve tried quite a few, and my YL ones are work horses. You can read more about how and why to diffuse oils here. The Desert Mist has this neat feature that looks like the golden flicker of a candle! You can add your oils and set it to run with the soft, flickering candle mode with no toxic candle fragrances and no fear of burning the house down. I call that a win! I put some cedarwood and Stress Away oils in there, climb in the bed, and I. Am. Out.
Twinkle Lights –
I think one of the reasons that people hate to see winter decor go is because the twinkly lights go with it. There is something so cozy and happy about them. But it doesn’t have to be holiday time to string some twinkle lights around and enjoy them! I like them year round. In the summer, I love to twist them up and put them in old, blue mason jars… It reminds me of fireflies! Twinkle lights look beautiful laid across a mantle, around a window, or along a shelf. The possibilities are endless. I love these that have a small battery pack and are on a flexible wire. You can put them just about anywhere!
Something Growing –
Some studies indicate that having plants in the home can improve the quality of the air, and also can have a positive affect on mood and have other health benefits for the home.
I am turning into a crazy houseplant lady. Not 50 cats, but 50 plants! I am not great at plant care, but I seem to be able to keep most of them alive for awhile anyway. Haha!
I have a few suggestions of plants that don’t need vary much attention and look really pretty.
Aloe
is a very easy plant that thrives inside. It’s water needs are pretty low and the ones I have had, have done pretty well in most areas of the house. They seem to like bright, indirect light.
Cactus
is another plant that isn’t very finicky and not too thirsty. I have one that has been with me for about 6-7 years and that is really a big deal for me, trust me! They come is all shapes and sizes and I think they look really cool and modern.
Air plants
are another neat plant to have in your home. They live without soil and can be perched on any matter of different surfaces and containers. I love the look of one in a glass terrarium with some pebbles and moss. They only need to be rinsed/soaked with water once or twice a month and they are happy campers.

Lamp Light Instead of Overhead Lighting –
Overhead lighting certainly has it’s place, but in the evening or on a dark and rainy day, I love to turn off the overhead fixtures and click on a few lamps around the room.
Lamp light has a softer, cozier feel to it, making a room warm and inviting. Overhead or florescent lighting can be harsh and glaring.
Placing a floor lamp near the back of your favorite reading chair or couch, a couple lamps on end tables or dressers and lighting a small lamp on a desk can really ramp up the cozy factor.
Adding Different Textures –
Varies interesting textures throughout your home adds visual appeal as well as comfort.
A sheepskin draped over a piano bench or the back of a char, for example, just begs to be touched.
A soft blanket on the couch, a nubby rug and a woven wall hanging all are different and interesting textures that draw you in and make you want to stay there awhile.
Of course the ultimate cozy accessory is a pup curled up on the char, but that’s just me. Ha!
