Summer Faves:
Mom Books:
The Mitford Series – I decided to finish the last few books in the Mitford Series (Father Tim Years) that I love so much. I have read all the books up until the last 4 or so. I read Home to Holly Springs and In the Company of Others this summer, and am beginning Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good. If you are new to this series, Start with At Home in Mitford! They are sweet, sentimental, wickedly funny and always uplifting!
Hannah Fowler – I enjoyed Hannah Fowler! I love a historical fiction story. This is about a very strong, determined settler woman in Kentucky. I love how resilient she is and how no matter what life hands her, she accepts it and with a positive attitude sets about the work in front of her. She appreciates the simple good things in life and weathers the very hard realities of frontier life with dignity.
House of Dreams: The Life of L.M. Montgomery – If you love Anne of Green Gables, you might like to read about the life of it’s author, Lucy Maud Montgomery. This was a book that drew me in and made me want to keep reading, to find out what kind of a life this interesting woman had. I don;t want to give anything away, but I was a bit surprised. Ironically, despite having a minister husband (early 1900’s Canada), Maud was definitely not a Christ follower, and I thought so many times how a relationship with the Lord could have given her life a completely different trajectory. Definitely interesting and worth the read if you are a fan of her novels. I have a better understanding and appreciation for the reason she created the Avonlea world that so many of us appreciate getting lost in.
Kid Finds:
Kitty diary with lock and keys – My daughter’s birthday was in August, and she had specifically asked for a diary with a lock. This one is so cute!!
Colored Pencils – Normally, I buy Prismacolor colored pencils because they are fantastic quality! But they are pretty expensive. I decided to try the Amazon brand. as I kept hearing great things about them. The nice thing about them (besides good quality) is they are soooooo inexpensive! Like, shockingly so. It may be a back-to-school special price, I don’t know. But grab up a set, or 3 and you’ll be set for the homeschool year!
Diamond Painting Kit – I gave my daughter a sunflower design and I have a mushroom one, similar to this. We both think it’s so fun and relaxing. It’s a craft you can sit down and do without thinking about it too much. Great for vegging out! There are intricate ones, and simpler ones for kids. I love this flower market vibe set for an adult, this cute bookmark set, and my kids looooved this animal sticker set!
Around the House:
Wondercide Yard Spray – We have had a bad year for ticks in our yard. Other years we have had bad chiggers. But this yard spray, which is natural and made with cedarwood oil, has nipped the problem in the bud for us each time we’ve needed it! It’s super easy to use too, you just attach it to your hose!
Flower Band-Aids – I can’t even handle how cute these band-aids are!! They are fabric too, which is my favorite kind. Perfect for a back-to-school goody basket!
Andelou BB Cream with Mineral Sunscreen – I love this tinted moisturizer/bb cream and have been using it for several years in lieu of foundation. I love how it makes my skin feel and I love that my face has a good mineral sunscreen built into my makeup routine without an extra step. It comes in one “natural tint” shade, so I’m not sure how it would do on different tones… I have cool fair skin. But the Amazon reviews have many people saying that it works for them when other mineral sunscreens left a white cast.
Castor Oil – Castor oil has gotten a resurgence of popularity lately! Everything from old fashioned castor oil packs, to eyelash growth and skin usages. I finally took the leap and ordered this kind, it’s in a glass bottle and in cold pressed, hexane free and organic which I hear is important. (It’s quite affordable!) I am trying it on my face at night as a moisturizing serum with lavender and frankincense essential oil, and on my cuticles and finger nails. I love it so far, it feels very moisturizing and absorbs quickly.
