Learn how to make your own natural and safe homemade baby powder that is easy to whip together and works like a charm without any nasty ingredients!
Keep your baby’s bottoms dry and soft with this natural and safe homemade baby powder that is a cinch to make. No need to worry about what you are putting on baby’s skin!
I am always watching carefully what products some into our home, and especially, ones that will go on my kids skin. Believe it or not, some of the most toxic personal care products on the market are actually made for babies. Isn’t that absolutely nuts?!
Baby powder, traditionally, is made of talc and fragrance. Google dangers of talc and see what comes up. Eek. and fragrance, oh brother. That sweet smell that everyone associates with a “baby smell” is actually a toxic chemical cocktail… A real mess. Hormone disruption, lung irritant, skin irritant… fragrances are just not something you want on your baby. Not a worry with this homemade recipe!

It’s so easy to make your own healthy and natural care products!
Once you have assembled some of the basic ingredients that most DIY personal care products require, you are set to make many variations and types. I like to make diaper cream, baby powder, body wash, and lotion to name a few.
It feels so good to know that the products you use on your family’s skin, our biggest organ, are safe and healthy.

What to Put Your Natural and Safe Homemade Baby Powder In
I am using a recycled glass spice jar as my baby powder shaker. I cleaned out a spice jar from Aldi, took of the label and got rid of the sticky residue with lemon essential oil. (Did you know citrus essential oils dissolve petrochemicals?) Then, because the holes in the shaker lid were too large for the powder, I cut a small circle of plastic craft mesh to fit the top of the jar. I placed it underneath the lid before screwing it on.
That is the option I would recommend if you are trying to be frugal and do things simply! It can be a bit messier, as the powder sort of “leaks” out around the edges, but fortunately, it is very easy to clean up with a quick brush.
There are also shaker bottle options available to purchase online fairly inexpensively, or you could purchase a powder container of some sort at the store and dump out the junk.
I love to use my homemade diaper rash cream and this baby powder alternating when changing diapers. The powder is so good for absorbing moisture, soothing and calming the skin. Sometimes I will use the powder first, and then add a layer of the diaper cream if the little bottom needs the extra protection and healing.
Safety note: Even though the ingredients are nontoxic and natural, fine particles of anything are not good to breath in, for you or for baby. Don’t go to town shaking this and working up a dust cloud. A soft, gentle tap or two can be enough powder without creating a puff in the air. Just be aware of that as you are using.

How to Make Your Homemade Baby Powder:
- Collect your ingredients and whatever bottle you want to use.
- Add 1 part clay powder to 1 part arrowroot powder to a mason jar. (It is important to note, that when working with clay, never let it touch metal. Use a wooden or even plastic spoon when scooping it out. Metal can “deactivate” the drawing properties of the clay.)
- Optional: Add 1-4 drops of lavender essential oil, depending on how much powder you are making. If you are using high quality oils, you shouldn’t need very much. (Be mindful of using pure, high quality essential oils.)
- Mix you powder up by giving the lidded jar a really good shake.
- Using your wooden spoon, scoop the powder into your shaker jar! Put the lid on tight.
- Label your jar. (I love this label maker and kind of obsessed with making labels for all kinds of things in my home, I love the vintage-y feel of these basic black, embossed labels.)

I find it soothing to the skin and it smells good, those are my reasons to add it. But you can definitely leave it out if you like! 🙂

If I use a metal topper on my mason jar will that deactivate the material(s) as well or just using the spoon to stir? TIA!
Hope says
Hi Michelle!
Since any exposure to metal could potentially deactivate the clay I would avoid it. You could make a shaker top with plastic craft mesh or perhaps buy a glass or plastic salt shaker with plastic lid. Or purchase a bottle of baby powder and empty it out and use that. Have a great day! Thanks for your interest! <3 Hope
