In this post, I am sharing my non-toxic, natural winter skincare routine and why it works for me!
I think in the winter especially, skin tends to do weird things.
It can get extra dry, cracked, flaky, dull and blah. I know for me, sometimes I will get dry split skin on my fingers if I’m in the dry, cold air a lot, and those hurt! My face tends to get drier and duller in the winter, and I have to pay a little extra attention to it then.
But what I don’t want to do, is use products on my skin that are harsh, or contain toxic ingredients. Our skin is like a sponge. Whatever we put on it, gets absorbed into our bodies… Into our bloodstream! That knowledge should make us think twice when we are choosing products to put on it. So here are my tips for healthy, well moisturized skin during the winter.

Natural Skin Cleansing
If I’m not careful, during the colder months, my skin will get very tight and dry. If I don’t use the right cleanser or if I over wash my face, my skin will rebel. I try to only wash my face with cleanser 1 time a day, in the evening before bed. I like to leave the natural oils alone in the morning and just splash my face with cold water.
First, here are the cleansers that I’m using now (I alternate between these two):
Acure Brightening Cleansing Gel – I really like this one, as it seems to be a good balance for me. It doesn’t leave a residue and I haven’t had any trouble with it breaking me out. It rinses clean, but doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight and dry. A little goes a long way and it’s pretty affordable. I like it.
Homemade Foaming Cleanser – This is a recipe that is super simple and that I actually don’t just use on my face! I use this at all my sinks for hand washing and on my kids as a body wash.
All it takes is a foaming pump, liquid Castile soap, a bit of sweet almond oil and water. I mix it up in the bottle and it works so well and is so foamy and doesn’t dry skin out.
This is a perfectly simple, and cheap face/body wash that works for me. It also does well with my skin and you can customize it by adding some essential oils if you wanted.
Nourishing and Natural Moisturizing
My moisturizer routine changes through the year, depending on my needs, but this is what is working for my winter skin.
Homemade Beauty Oil –This is a simple combination of sweet almond oil and Melrose essential oil in a dropper bottle. I have discovered that I love sweet almond oil for my face! It just seems to work well with my skin. I have tried several oils, and this is the best for me so far.
I use a little squirt in my palm, and rubbed all over my face before I go to bed each night. It is deeply hydrating and I wake up with very soft skin.
The Melrose is a blend of essential oils from Young Living that is wonderful for skin. The ingredients are Melaleuca, Naouli, Rosemary and Clove. It is supposed to have cleansing properties and help improve the appearance of skin.

Orange Blossom Moisturizer – This is a product that I buy from Young Living. It is actually a very light moisturizer, and it layers beautifully under makeup, so I wear this in the morning. When I first got it, I thought it was not going to be enough moisture. I figured I would save it for summer, when I don’t need as much. But I gave it a chance, and my skin is actually loving it. Maybe because I use the beauty oil at night, but I feel it is a perfect daytime moisturizer for me.
Happy Eyes Roller Bottle – This is a roller bottle of carrier oil and essential oil that I like to roll on around my eyes, and also on some areas that I notice are developing a few wrinkles… Between my eyes, and around my mouth.
I take a glass roller bottle, add a few drops of Frankincense essential oil, a few drops of lavender oil and top it off with carrier oil. I have used jojoba and sweet almond. These oils have wonderful properties to support the skin and affect the appearance.
I usually do this before bed.
Deep Moisture For Extra Dry Spots
There are always those areas that need extra attention! Hands, feet, knees, rough patches, cracks and splits sometimes on the fingers, eczema…
My two favorite moisturizers for those cases are Shea Butter and Tallow Balm.
Shea Butter is a wonderful, thick and rich nut butter that is incredibly soothing and healing. I love it straight, just scooped out of the container and rubbed in like body butter. It works really well for extremely dry areas. It is very good for sensitive skin as well.
Tallow Balm is something I am fairly new to. I just ordered some this month, and I am in love. (I will link where I got it below in the shopping section!) It has some interesting properties that make it very compatible with human skin. Tallow balm is rich and buttery, and absorbs very well. It leaves the skin so soft and is even more healing and soothing than the Shea, if it were possible. I use this on my kids when their skin is dry or rashy. It works wonderfully.
I love that both of these products are safe and have no extra ingredients to worry about.
Lips
I reach for two different products to keep my lips soft and moisturized. In the cold weather, there’s nothing worse than stinging, dry, chapped lips. It’s the worst! So I try to keep mine slathered up, especially at night before I go to sleep!
Burt’s Bees Lip Balm – This is my fave. I’ve tried lots. This is the one that keeps my lips in good shape and feels good. Sometimes I feel like some lip balms actually make me more in need of applying them, like they almost dry your lips out more! It’s weird! But Burt’s does not do that.
Rose Ointment –I get this from Young Living, and I keep it in my bedside table and layer it on my lips before I go to sleep. It works some sort of magic overnight and my lips are very happy when I wake up. This is really good stuff y’all. It has one of the most precious essential oils in it… Rose!
Mud Mask
Another thing that that I incorporate into my non-toxic, natural winter skincare routine that helps me keep my skin from getting dull and lifeless during the winter is this DIY Mud Mask. I love how it freshens up the skin, tones and tightens pores, pulls out impurities and exfoliates some of the dead skin cells. Go check out my homemade clay mask recipe. It’s super easy to make. I try to do one every couple of weeks, or at least once a month.
Dry Brushing
Have your ever heard of dry brushing? It is a way of creating brisk circulation in your system, bringing blood to the skin and removing dead skin cells. It is quite refreshing. I try to remember to do it, and I forget to a lot of the time. Not sure why, because it really feels good!
I have a long handled, natural bristle brush that I use. Starting at the ends of my extremities, I work my way in towards my heart, brushing in long strokes. I do this before a shower or bath. It gets your skin all tingly and awake, I love it! Some say that this can help with the appearance of cellulite and uneven skin, as well.
Drink Up
Another way to make sure your skin is plump and well hydrated all year long is to drink lots of fresh, clean water.
Put it in a cup you like, put some ice in, maybe a citrus wedge or a drop of your favorite Young Living Vitality oil and drink up! Drinking a lot of water (instead of drinking other things like soda and sweet tea and sweet fruit juices all the time) is good for so many reasons, but it is great for your skin!
So that’s my winter skin care routine!

Oh, great tip! I finally realized that oil isn’t the bad guy! Funny how I spent years trying to get rid of it and that had the opposite effect! 🤦🏼♀️

These are great tips! I feel the same about some lip balms – they dry out instead of moisturize.

These are all great ideas! I have a very simple skin care routine and this is the first winter that I’ve not struggled with dry skin on my face in a while. I think most of it has to do with not washing my face as often.
