Sink into a warm bath tub with a lovely little soothing oat bathtub pouch for dry skin … A wonderful, soothing treat for any age skin.
In this post, I share basically the most simple “recipe” you could possibly imagine…
When I was a kid, I had sensitive skin. I had reactions to different soaps and lotions and things with dyes or fragrance always were an irritation.
My mom bought me the one, certain kind of shampoo that I could use and she even made me a big batch of homemade oatmeal soap one time. I remember using those little square bars of hard soap with chunks of oats for YEARS.
Something else she did with oats, was have me take an oat bath. She would put some oatmeal in the center of a piece of cloth, wrap it up and tie it with a string or rubber band and throw it in the bathtub with me.
I remember squishing the little parcel of oats, squeezing the oat milk out as it made the bathwater cloudy. I also remember that I always ended up squeezing too hard and the mushy, sticky oats would leak out and into the tub.

SOOTHING OAT BATHTUB POUCH VIDEO:
Ar Oats Good for skin?
I didn’t know why oatmeal was good for the skin back then, or give it much thought, but my mom knew what was up.
Apparently, oats have a long history with skincare. There are many studies on the effectiveness of oats when used to soothe and protect severely dry, itchy or inflamed and irritated skin. (Here’s one.)
Oats are commonly used in special bath mixtures, lotions, washes, creams and more.
What’s commonly used is called colloidal oatmeal, which just means that regular oats have been ground into a fine powder so it’s easy to mix into different applications. Google it! There is a lot of good evidence that oats are great for soothing the skin.
If you’ve ever had oats in your bath before, you will know that when wet, they give off a sort of creamy milk that is very slimy and mucilaginous. Perfect for coating and soothing troubled skin.
HOW TO MAKE AN OAT BATHTUB POUCH
I must attribute this whole idea to my mommy, who was giving me soothing oatmeal bath soaks long before natural health and organic skincare was much of a thing. The only think I have changed in this “recipe” is the pouch.
I found these absolutely, so-darling-I’m-dying-over-them little muslin pouches. My head is swarming with thinking up other ideas for using them! But I mainly got them with this in mind , and they turned out perfect.
The best part, is that I threw two of these in the tub with my kids the other night, who are 1 and 5 respectively, and neither one of the little hooligans were able to squeeze a speck of oatmeal of the pouch. And believe me, it wasn’t from lack of trying. Ha!
So hold on tight, because this is where things get really complicated…
- Put oats into the pouch.
- Tie the pouch up snugly. (If making for kids, wrap the strings around a couple times and double knot. Be thorough here!)
- Throw the pouch into a tub of warm water and dive in after it!
USING YOUR SOOTHING OAT BATHTUB POUCH FOR DRY SKIN
Hot water is drying to the skin, so if that is a problem, set the temperature to warm.
When the pouch is thrown in the tub, the oats get to work right away, making the water a milky color.
Like I said before, oats are very slick and slippery when you wet them. My kids love holding the pouches in the tub, squeezing them and feeling the slimy goo.
You can also take the wet pouch and rub it all over the skin, or the irritated area, coating the oatmeal milk/goo on the skin. If you are able, let it sit on the skin a bit and do it’s magic.
Rinse the skin and towel dry carefully, not rubbing as this irritates the skin further.
While the skin is still damp is the perfect opportunity to apply a rich moisturizer. My favorite with my kids and myself are tallow balm and Shea butter. Pure and clean ingredients, and deep and healing moisture.

Hi! I absolutely love this idea! Definitely going to give it a try. Can I ask what you do with the pouches once you have had a bath? Is it a one time use only thing? Or can you let them dry out and reuse the pouch again? Thanks!

Hello! You can absolutely reuse the pouch! After the bath, I flip it inside out and shake off the oatmeal in the trash and then hand wash. Leave to dry and it will be good as new! It is best to clean out pouch right away so it doesn’t dry in there. Thanks for the question!

YAAY Hopie! A-PLUS! Your Mom does come up with some GREAT ideas. Her concoction of coco butter and coconut oil and I have NO idea what else is a KILLER for super dry skin. It smells so good I want to get a big slurp every time I use it which is 2ice a day but have restrained myself so far. I need it on the outside more than the inside. It would get Coco’s snoot wiggling as well. GOOD stuff. And if the 2 goomers couldn’t squeeze any oatmeal out of that pouch, it was WELDED! Mucho success with your new venue and we’ll keep digging the GOOD life!

It does smell good enough to eat, I’m sure! Thank you Lewie!
